Your lawn does a lot more for you than just give your home curb appeal. The plants,
trees, shrubs and grass scrub the air, retain valuable moisture, provide cooling, recycle
water, etc. So you lawn not only look good...it is good for you. Just wiggling you toes
in a healthy lawn is a big stress relief. Try it some time and awaken your inner child.

Check your Sprinklers to $ave Water and Money.
Check your sprinklers at least once a month to ensure that they are spraying on your lawn and not the street or
worse yet...the walls of your home. Most sprinkler system have a test cycle that will enable you to see where your
sprinklers are directed in a shorter time frame than the set cycle. If your sprinklers are spraying directly on the
walls of your home...you are not only wasting water, but it is bad for the walls of your home and provides the
perfect place for insects to get moisture and enter your home. If your sprinklers are spraying anywhere other than
your lawn, you are wasting precious water and costing yourself money. Be sure to fix any broken sprinkler heads
as soon as you can.
Be sure that the water is evaporated fully or it may encourage the growth of mold and fungus.
During the winter months it is best to water in the early morning so the sun can dry up any excess water.
In the Summer - Water twice a week for at least 45 minutes to an hour in each zone and set the "Start Time" to
start watering in the evening or just after midnight. Do not water during the day in direct sun when the grass is
hot and the evaporation factor is high. You want the water from your sprinkler system go into you lawn and not be
wasted by evaporation. Watering your lawn right can save you costly sodding replacement.
In Rainy Weather - If we get a good rain that lasts for at least 45 minutes and soaks the ground, reset your
sprinkler system to skip the sprinkling session for that River, we need all we can get.
Use common sense and follow the St. Johns Riverkeeper Guidelines for Watering your lawn.

The above picture is in The Florida Lawn Handbook by the University of Florida and shows you how to test your
lawn to determine if it needs to be watered. The picture above is extreme and you should not let your lawn get to
this point. That being said, to test to see if you should water your lawn step on your lawn as above and if the
footprints remain visible it means that your lawn should be watered now!
Watering your lawn is very important, your lawn needs enough water to grow, but you must also respect our water resources & try to find an alternative water supply. Watering your lawn may cost you a lot in the summer, but remember...the winter is coming.

Rain Water Recycling Example
|
Continually monitor your sprinkler systems to be sure you are watering the right areas, that you are not wasting
water on the sidewalks or streets, that your sprinkler heads are functioning properly and that you are not over
watering you lawn.
Coordinate your systems with the your rain levels. When we are having heavy rains, turn off your sprinkler
system. DO NOT FORGET to turn it back on again...
"Irrigation is one of the most important cultural practices for your lawn. Improper irrigation is often the cause of
lawn injury or death."
Quote from The Florida Lawn Handbook by University of Florida...
How much should I water my St. Augustine grass?
In the Summer - Water twice a week for an hour in each zone except when we have rain. If the rainfall
is enough to give your lawn a good drink...don't run the sprinklers that day and save the water.
In the Winter - Water as little as possible.
Alternative Water Sources
|
You might check to see if your neighborhood has any alternative sources of ground water that you can use. If not,
maybe you can get your community to start a focus group to look into ways to harvest or recycle water that can be
Rain harvesting rain barrels are also available and once they are installed, they are almost maintenance free.
Why pay to purify drinking water that you are not going to drink. Save energy and water at the same time you
save our resources. That being said...
Look for ways to water your lawn that do not use "Drinking Water" quality water. Your lawn does not need the
high quality of drinking water. The chemicals that are in drinking water like chlorine and florine, etc., are not the
best water source for lawn. Most of the good stuff like minerals have been filtered out.
