Most of the lawns I see that are in bad shape have one thing in common. They are all
compacted. That means that if you walk on them they are as hard as concrete, or if
they’re not that bad, it is still difficult to push a screwdriver blade 3 or 4 inches into
the soil.
A compacted lawn cannot breathe and grass roots and “good guys” like earthworms all
need air to breathe. Also, water cannot penetrate into a compacted lawn and as
everyone knows, nothing good happens when you don’t have air or water.
Compacted lawns can be caused by grass that is consistently kept too short, especially
grass in full sun in the summer, ( See: Mowing Your Lawn Correctly). Compacted
lawns can be caused by a failure in the irrigation system or an inability of the soil to
hold moisture,(See Watering the Lawn Correctly), then, of course, you can have a
compacted lawn, simply because it has been compacted.
This happens when people park their cars on the lawn, play soccer or football on the
lawn, or the builder did it with heavy equipment when the home was being built. One
of the most frequent things I see is tire tracks in the lawn from a heavy lawn tractor
mowing it after a rain. You’re really better off paying the guy not to mow your grass if
it’s wet. If he compacts your lawn, it always leads to weeds, disease, bad bugs or
crabgrass.
The quickest way to fix a compacted lawn is to do a " core aeration”. A professional
core aerator machine pulls out small cores from the lawn to open it up to water and
air. The spiked shoes and tow behind gizmos that are said to “aerate” the lawn are
kind of like comparing T-ball to major league baseball; (not the same game). Core
aeration is a good idea for hard lawns, old lawns and lawns that have been treated with
chemicals for years. Call us if you would like a core aeration done for your lawn.
The fact is, 99% of the tiny insects and other organisms in your lawn are helpful or at
least not harmful. Then again, the other 1% can be very damaging if not controlled
properly.
I’ll be the 1st one to tell you that the chemical lawn guys can really grow grass. The
trouble is the product they grow is not a natural lawn. We also need to seriously
examine what it means to the public health when chemical companies brag about
controlling “pests” below and above ground with “all season long” products. Is it any
wonder that our honeybees, frogs, songbirds and all our other beautiful creatures are
disappearing?
One of the reasons chemical lawns need so many pesticides is that they radiate a
weird, unnatural energy that is like “ringing the dinner bell” to pests like chinch bugs.
Chinch bugs constantly seek the weird energy that radiates from weak, unhealthy
lawns. Once we have given you a natural lawn pest insects like chinch bugs will no
longer attack your healthy grass. Also, Nature's Way can control insects like chinch
bugs with a combination of botanical, mineral and chemical controls that are safe for
the environment.

What is your lawn telling You?

"When people call and tell me they have a weed problem, I already know what they
have is not a weed problem. What they have is a cultural problem, in other words, a
mowing problem, watering problem, a compaction problem or a fertilizing problem."
In the November/December 2007 issue of Florida Pest Pro Magazine, Dr. Laurie
Trenholm, Urban Turf grass Specialist, University of Florida states,
"The best approach to weed control is to grow a strong lawn through proper
fertilization, irrigation and mowing."
Charles Walters, in his book, Weed Control Without Poisons, states,
"The most important thing to understand is that soil is not dirt, it is a living system
and desirable microbes are responsible for all nutrients in the soil. The real crop to
feed is the microbe. If the microbe is happy it will take care of nutrient availability of
the plant."

Our natural lawn program adds all the minerals necessary for a healthy lawn and also feeds the native microbes
in your soil to increase their numbers .Having plenty of beneficial microbes in your lawn can unlock a wealth of
nutrients as well as turn grass clippings, leaves and twigs into fertilizer.
There are no "natural" effective weed control agents for lawn grass However, there are non-toxic chemistries in
liquid and dry formulations that we use very effectively for all weed types in our lawns, including crabgrass, dollar
weed and sedges. There are some very sophisticated herbicides available today. These mimic the natural growth
regulators found in weeds and not grass, people, pets or wildlife.
Establishing a healthy, pest free, weed free lawn takes at least one full season. Nature is a rhythm of shifting
greens and browns. Nature is seasonal and healing. Walt Whitman called grass, “ The forgiveness of nature”.
Grass and trees do much to help our environment, our spirit and our quality of living. Let Nature's Way give you
